In 2003 when Francois-Cerrah was 21 years, she embraced Islam. It is the time when she graduated from Cambridge University. At the time, she was a Roman Catholic. The honorable 2nd term prime minister of the people’s republic of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina was born at Tungipara in the district of Gopalganj on the 28th September, 1947. She is a Muslima. According to FORBES she is one of The Most Powerful Women In Politics For 2014. She is still now trying to establish women rights in Bangladesh. She is the eldest of 5 children of the founder of independent Bangladesh and Father of the nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. She graduated from the University of Dhaka in 1973.
In addition, she served on the student’s union of Government intermediate girl’s college as vice president. She was also secretary of the students’ league unit, as well as being a member of the students’ league unit at Dhaka University. Right from her student days she has been in active participation in every mass movement.

When the father of the nation , Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was martyred along with his family members on the 15th of August in 1975,  Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana, her younger sister were in west Germany at the time and as such were the only survivors. She later traveled to the United Kingdom in 1980 where she began her movement against autocratic rule at the time. She was unanimously elected to serve as president of the Bangladesh Awami league in 1981 in absent as she was forced into exile in New Delhi. She returned home on the 17th day in May 1981, ending six year in exile.

Achievements:

She received many awards and recognition, among which was the conferment of the degree of “Doctor of Law” by the Boston University in the USA on 6 February 1997 and the honorary Doctor of Law by the Waseda University in japan on 4 July 1997. The University of Abertay Dundee of the United Kingdom conferred on her the honorary “Doctorate of Philosophy” in liberal arts on the 25th October 1997. Visva-Vharati University of west Bengal, India conferred on her the honorary degree of “Desikottama” (doctor of literature, honoris causa) on 28 January 1999. The Australian national University also conferred on her the “Doctor of Laws“, honoris causa in the light of her innovative contributions in the service of society on 20 October 1999. For her outstanding contributions towards peace and democracy, Dhaka University conferred on her the honorary “Doctor of Laws” on 18 December 1999. For her decisive role in establishing democracy and for protecting human rights and ensuring peace, the world famous catholic university of Brussels, Belgium awarded her with an honorary doctorate degree on 4th February 2000. Sheikh Hasina has also been conferred honorary “Doctor of Humane Letters” by the Bridgeport University, USA on the 5th of September 2000. She has been awarded UNESCO’s “Houphouet-Boigny Peace Prize” in 1998 for her remarkable efforts to bringing peace by ending the 25 year conflict in Chittagong hill tract through her display of political courage and statesmanship.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on the 9th of April 2000 received the prestigious Pearl S. buck award ’99 in recognition of her courage, vision, and her achievement in the political, humanitarian and economic fields by the Randolph Macon Woman’s College of USA. The Food and agriculture organization (FAO) awarded the prestigious CERES medal to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her efforts to fight hunger on 2nd August 1999. The Mother Theresa Award was given to her in 1998 by the all India peace council. For her promoting the growth of grassroots democracy in Bangladesh, and her contributions to promoting communal understanding and non violent religious harmony, Sheikh Hasina was awarded the M K Gandhi award in Oslo by the Mahatma M K Gandhi foundation. The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International named Sheikh Hasina a Paul Harris fellow. The international association of lion clubs gave her a medal of distinction in 1996-1997 and 1998-99. She also received the head of state medal in 1996-97.
